Summer Book Club for Especially Meaningful High Holidays:

Seeking the Hiding God: A Personal Theological Essay by Dr. Arnold Eisen

Every year, Derek Fields weaves learning through our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. As befits the Nassau Shul’s culture of participatory study, he facilitates discussion rather than delivering sermons.

This year, Bruce Huttner will lead a special summer session of the Philosophy Book Club, diving into Seeking the Hiding God: A Personal Theological Essay, by Dr. Arnold Eisen, which Derek will explore at services. Eisen, Chancellor Emeritus of the Jewish Theological Seminary, studies the American Jewish community. The book begins with email exchanges among the author and friends about this more personal project. They demonstrate a wide diversity of Jewish views on God’s presence and absence – each of them worthy of contemplation and respect. The book is an accessible read, likely to touch on what each of us sometimes feels. By sharing his journey of belief, hope, skepticism, and thought, Eisen draws readers into considering their own.
