Membership

 Membership is Not Required

The Nassau Synagogue’s tradition is that one need not be a member to attend Shabbat and holiday services or to participate in our events and programs. We never sell tickets, charge a fee, or require membership to attend High Holiday services. Religious, cultural and educational activities are equally open to members and nonmembers, as is a subscription to our newsletter and weekly announcements.

Why Join?

As a paid member, you can best help the Nassau Shul serve the entire community and ensure that our historic building is lovingly maintained. Becoming a paid member is an investment in the shul’s future, though we keep the dues low so that we’re not asking too much of any individual or family. Members are eligible to serve on the board of trustees and to be included in a membership directory.

What Does Annual Membership Cost?

Individual dues are $200 per year.

Family dues are $300 per year.

Who May Become a Member?

Halakhically Jewish individuals may become paid members. Families of mixed religious backgrounds may also join, so long as one family member is halakhically Jewish.

A bit more on this question. American Jewish communities often feel a tension between tradition and change. As a small, rural congregation, the Nassau Shul has felt that tug for over a century. In each era, the board strives to find a middle path, seeking adaptations that nourish the present community, honor the past, and ensure the future.  All people — regardless of religious affiliation or background — are welcome to participate in Nassau Shul’s Jewish prayer, study, volunteerism, and events with good will and respect for the shul’s customs and norms.

Voting

Each family and individual membership is entitled to one vote per household. In religiously mixed families, the Jewish member may vote.
