Culture and Education

Nassau Synagogue and Jewish Community Center — a name that seems wider than the modest building — reflects the founders’ determination that this shul be both a place of worship and a center of Jewish culture and learning.

A generative tension between tradition and adaptation has spurred the Nassau Shul forward for 113 years and counting. “The odds that the young Jewish community would survive even five years were shockingly low…. But Nassau’s Jewish farmers demonstrated an exceptional tenacity and willingness to innovate…” (100th Anniversary Booklet, pg. 4). Our Culture & Education programming reflects that mix of old and new, exploring sacred and wisdom texts, meeting current interests, and engaging pressing issues and cultural phenomena.

(Jewish) Philosophy Book Club

This book club began years ago with a series of key Jewish philosophers and has wandered afield into broader philosophical streams such as existentialism. Newcomers are always welcome, and participation is available in person and by Zoom.

Creative Community Events

The Nassau Shul community includes musicians, writers, performers, and artists, and is connected to many more creatives within the regional Jewish community. We organize events throughout the year that include author talks, open mics, poetry readings, and more.

Speaker Series

Guest speakers expand our understanding of local, American, and global Jewish experiences, including the Immigrant Experience, Israel Today, and Jewish Farming.

Jewish Text Study

Most Shabbat morning services include participatory Torah study. Additional opportunities to delve into biblical and rabbinic texts are announced throughout the year.

L'Dor va’Dor (Generation to Generation)

In its century-long history, the Nassau Shul community has treasured its children. Every child is welcomed warmly — and soon offered bins of engaging books and activities. Several current members were once the children making our holiday celebrations raucous and fun. Though 113 years of shifting demographics have shaped the shul’s ability to host a Hebrew School, the board will eagerly return its attention to children’s programming when the next influx of young families is ready to join and roll up their sleeves.
